Welcome to

Emerald Place Clinic

Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and Elysium Healthcare are working in partnership to provide a new mental health inpatient service for young people in Surrey in a new purpose-built unit. Emerald Place Clinic is available solely for NHS funded care and treatment and the partnership brings together complementary expertise and best practice to jointly manage the inpatient unit and deliver a high-quality service for young people.

More information about Emerald Place Clinic

Emerald Place Clinic is a general adolescent inpatient unit for the care and treatment of young people aged 13 up to the age of 18.  Young people who are admitted to the unit will have a primary diagnosis of mental illness across a wide range of disorders and complex needs. These could include mental health conditions such as mood disorders and acute psychosis.  Additionally, young people may have co-existing additional needs such as neurodevelopmental disorders, including mild learning disabilities or autism. A young person could also be admitted if they have disordered eating.

Environment

Emerald Place Clinic is situated in Charlwood, Surrey.  It is a purpose built, well-equipped environment which provides 12 individual ensuite bedrooms including a 2-bed Extra Care Area (ECA), a variety of lounge and recreational spaces, therapy rooms and a well-resourced school.

In addition to the internal space there is an attractive courtyard garden and a pleasant outdoor green space, which is available for use by visitors to the service and to facilitate escorted Section 17 leave.

Education

There is an Ofsted registered independent school onsite which offers education from Key Stage 3 (KS3) through to GCSE and A-levels. The education team enables young people to continue with their schooling whilst receiving treatment, in partnership with their local school and education authority. The education team will liaise with the young person’s current school or college and will set work or support the young person with any work sent.

Approach

We have a dedicated Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) that provide specialist person-centred care tailored to meet individual needs. The team consists of Psychiatrists, Nurses, Healthcare Assistants, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, Therapists, and teaching staff. The team provides a full assessment of the young person and uses a holistic approach to care, based on an understanding of emotional and physical needs, helping individuals move away from potentially harmful and destructive behaviours.

The MDT follows the Care Programme Approach (CPA) which is a process within specialised mental health services to assess a young person’s needs, put a plan of care in place and review the implementation of this plan. The CPA is followed for all young people admitted to Emerald Place Clinic, with formal CPA meetings held at a minimum frequency of once every 6 weeks; they may be more frequent according to need.  The initial CPA meeting will be held within the first two weeks of admission. Each CPA will involve the wider inpatient MDT (including school), the young person, family or carers and any involved external professionals and services.

Group Therapy

The therapy department coordinate and lead the group therapy programme. This programme involves therapeutic group work and therapeutic physical activity. Groups are clinically reviewed monthly to ensure there is scope to be responsive to the individual needs of the young people.  Group work offered includes relaxation techniques, coping skills, recovery, self-soothing and peer group activities.

Community to inpatient pathway

For young people who are resident in Surrey and/or are Surrey looked after children the staff at Emerald Place Clinic work closely with a community-based provider of emotional wellbeing and mental health services. This provider is called Mindworks Surrey and is an alliance of NHS, national and local voluntary sector organisations working to meet the needs of children and young people by providing advice, help and support in the local community as close to home as possible. As an alliance and wider system of children’s services there is a commitment shared by Elysium and Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust to providing the right care and support at the right time in the least restrictive environment possible.  The addition of Emerald Place Clinic ensures that more care needs can be met within Surrey in a timely way.
